ARCHITECT AS FORTUNETELLER
Having mentioned in one of my former blogs that an engineer is unfortunate kind, forced by his profession to stick by the principle of truth, I have to say that architects are even worse off : things that they build last for hundreds years , sometimes for millennia. So, they have to forsee not only what may happen with climate or soil, but also how human preferences will develop, concerning travel, work, leisure, warefare, expectations for safety.Sometimes against illogical trends of the day, dictated by temporary frenzies, hypes or " fireman-pyroman-syndrome " (those who dealt with organised forces ,understand).Hard job, indeed...
I never concealed my distaste with high rises - for bad aestethic, questionable functionality, missed social message. It seems that the guy who started it as a fashion in urbi-forming , Le Corbusier , wasnt even qualified architect .... But, sorry, it is like with the mountains : because they already exist , people will built higher and higher.
At least we should take into consideration a simple fact, that other technologies also develop , and sometimes infer, albeit unwanted, into territory of architecture. I mean in particular - tectonics.
Buildings are heavy, and they have to rest. Solidly rest. Up till now, traditional identification of seismic zones was enough to qualify a foundation of the building and to be on the safe side - say, up to R5 ,R6, dynamic attenuators included.
This is not enough, not anymore.
Why ? Just keep reading my blog….
